Whirlpool: Highlighting Home Energy Conservation
Challenge: As a long-standing manufacturer of ENERGY STAR appliances, Whirlpool is committed to developing products that exceed energy efficiency requirements and needs around the world. To supplement its product portfolio, Whirlpool partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Lowe's, GreenHomes America and the Edison Electrical Institute to educate consumers about simple ways to save energy and money by bringing awareness to the ENERGY STAR label and benefits of its products.
Strategy & Execution: The program, entitled the Home Energy Blueprint, focused on the themes that consumers’ lifestyles can be energy efficient without sacrificing convenience, style and modern features; and that they can have a measurable impact by using ENERGY STAR appliances and home sealing products. In order to demonstrate the ease of being efficient, Whirlpool and its partners offered makeovers to the 10 most inefficient houses in the U.S. The makeovers, supplemented by seasonal tips, served as the focus for media and consumer outreach, both locally and on a national level.
Result: The program was able to find and rectify a number of safety issues in the homes, and improved energy efficiency at such a level that they saw hundreds of dollars in savings in less than a year. Media coverage of the makeovers and the program was extremely positive.
